What To Do When Feeling Overwhelmed

First, remember it is just a feeling, and feelings are often fleeting. Or perhaps, remember that the feeling will eventually pass. Second, write down everything that comes to mind that may be contributing to this “feeling of being overwhelmed.” Third, prioritize which one(s) need your immediate attention. Fourth, mindfully act with love.

4 Reasons Why We Feel Or Get Overwhelmed

  1. The number one cause of feeling overwhelmed is procrastination. When you put things off that have to get done, guess what? They accumulate and suddenly you realize that you do not have enough time to get them done. This is especially important to remember when there are time sensitive deadlines.
  2. Another big reason why we get overwhelmed, is an inability to say “No!” So, you pile too many things on your plate, thinking, believing, or feeling that you are superman or wonder woman. Guess what, there is such a thing as spreading yourself too thin, which ultimately backfires on several levels:
    • You don’t give each job 100% and the quality of your work suffers
    • You are stressed and unhappy, which takes away from your daily joy and peace
    • Contentment disappears as you fret constantly about trying to get everything done
    • You become resentful and irritable (destroying your relationships in the process)
  3. The inability to patiently wait and trust the process. I know this is a big one for me, and I am still a work in progress when it comes to the patience thing. The inability to trust forces you to be impatient and try to get things done all on your own. This goes back to number two, because you end up piling on way too much on your plate because you did not trust others to do it as well as you.
  4. Your desire or your need for control can lead to you feeling completely overwhelmed. If anyone reading this knows me well, they will also recognize this is one of those things that I struggle with. The truth about control is that it is a relative term.
    • There are some things that we have control over and then there are many things we have absolutely no control over.
    • We cannot predict the future, and that means one second from now. Which means there is always uncertainty in life, and it is something we must have the patience and the faith to accept.
    • We must truly learn to practice the art of acceptance. Is it gut wrenching when people hurt us, or when terrible things happen? Absolutely! But, take comfort in knowing that you responded or behaved from a state or a place of love.
    • Trust that there is one who loves you unconditionally and wants the best for you, and He is always in control.

  • Allow for emergencies
  • Accept the reality that life throws occasional curb balls
  • Recognize when you need help and ask for help
  • Learn to delegate
  • Resist the urge to control the world
  • Always remember that your response reflects your state of health
  • Pray and trust in God’s providence and protection
