2 Main Reasons Why We Struggle to Let Go

You have heard the saying, “let go and let God;” however, it is not as simple as that. If it were that simple, there would be no need for coaches, counselors, or therapists.  The problem with letting go is that it is tied to our emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual beings. There is an emotional reason why we hold on; furthermore, there are also physical (chemical), mental, and spiritual reasons why we hold on.

THE EMOTIONAL REASON

There is FEAR. In a weird way our emotional reason for holding on is tied to our spiritual reason. I like to say that the opposite of fear is love, but let’s look at it a little differently today. We fear because we do not TRUST the sovereignty, love, providence, protection, power, and faithfulness of God. Therefore, we think if we let go of fear, what will fill the void. Yet, when we let go and trust God fully, we fill the void with LOVE. Perfect love casts out fear; however, we have to first stop embracing fear, stop clinging to fear, so that we can fully embrace love. Take a deep breath.

  • Ask yourself, what am I gaining from holding on to fear?
  • What has fear cost me?
  • Am I willing to continue sacrificing my health for fear?
  • Why would I rather believe the lies than the truth?

Fear is not your friend! Take it a step further, there is nothing comforting about fear. The other means by which letting go is tied to us spiritually is that fear is the consequence of erroneous spiritual beliefs. Yet, like every habit, there is something we gain from holding on to fear. That may be difficult to accept, but it is true. Think about that for a bit – there is something you gain from holding on to your fear.  Fear is also tied to our mental being, because like our beliefs, there is something that you are thinking that amps up your feelings of fear.

THE PHYSICAL REASON

The state your body is in when you are fearful is a state of physical arousal. You feel energized. In a weird way, you feel alive. Could that be what has kept you so attached to fear? However, that is the illusion of fear, because when your body remains in this state for a prolonged period of time, you cause dis-ease and chronic inflammation. Isn’t the feeling of love more invigorating and empowering? They are both states of physical arousal; however, one leads to abundant life and the other leads to death. At some point, we must confront the issue and make the healthier choice if we desire to be totally healthy. The first time you say ‘NO’ will be the hardest, but it will get easier and better with practice. Remember, God has not given us a spirit of fear. He has given each of us a spirit of love, with the power and the strength to say NO!

THE SOLUTION LIES INSIDE US

We believe with our heart, we think with our mind, and we confess by our actions. Our actions confess what is in our hearts, which can defile us. If you are not happy with the current state of your life, then it is time to take it to God in prayer. Only God can create in us a clean heart and renew our minds. Prayer is the solution; however, more important, it is a relationship that involves our complete surrender to the will of God. Be in complete spiritual alignment if you want to be transformed
