THREE directions a person can take after losing a loved one

Many of you may not know this but I grew up as an Anglican, going to church every Sunday with my mother back in the islands. When I came to the USA, I continued to go to church every Sunday until 1988. That was the year my handsome brother committed suicide and I turned my back on God.

THE DIRECTION AWAY FROM GOD

I believed and thought that “If God really cared and loved us, He would not have allowed this.” He is after all our Sovereign leader and healer. He could have healed my brother and softened his heart to allow him to seek another SOLUTION to whatever the problem with which he was wrestling. A problem so overwhelming and, yes, painful, that he saw no other available option but to end his life.

My heart aches to this day. To realize that my brother was in so much inner turmoil/conflict and none of us knew. Furthermore, he did not feel comfortable or safe enough to tell one of us. We make decisions that are often skewed when we are functioning in an emotional tsunami that has absolutely nothing to do with reality. I believe as a child of God, that NO MATTER what you are going through, God can and will provide a better way. God will comfort and soothe the pain, IF you would simply call on Him. Lean on Him and trust in His Sovereignty. I was not there yet, so I walked away from light into darkness.

THE SELF-CENTERED DIRECTION

I lived in this second direction from 1988 – 2010. In this direction it is all about self and my selfish wants and desires. I completely shut LOVE out of my life. In essence I shut God out of my life. You know what happens when you close the door on love, something else will always take its place. That something is usually never good for our TOTAL HEALTH. I still believed in God, but I was rebelling. I was proud and stubborn; I was going to do this on my own. Yet, here is the rub, where do we get our strength? Our strength comes from Jesus Christ. Thus, I had to work twice as hard to accomplish anything and I was CONSTANTLY dissatisfied, exhausted, and empty. Take up my yoke and follow me, it is not burdensome. If you are struggling, you may want to ask, am I walking in my flesh or in the Spirit. This is a direction where you think you can straddle the fence. Not very comfortable in the long run, and it destroys your TOTAL HEALTH.

THE DIRECTION TOWARDS GOD

My Christian rebirth began slowly in November 2010. Torrential rains were pouring in Manhattan and Barnes and Nobles was still on 53rd and third. I was inspired to get back to the Bible and I needed a large print Bible, because the font of the current Bible I had from 1990, needed a magnifying glass…. LOL. I am not perfect folks, I make horrendous mistakes still; however, I know where my heart and mind are focused. I now have clarity about the path I MUST walk. I know my P.I.C. and I am fully embracing it and my mission to spread the gospel through health. While on this earth, our time is transient; however, we each, as children of God, have a specific calling to fulfill the purpose for our creation. Do not let the petty things of this world steal your joy, peace, and contentment. Keep your EYE on your FOCUS – your God destined purpose. Fulfill it with joy and love and remember, there is a time and a season for everything under the sun.

  1. I really enjoyed this very timely article Susan. I could hear you speak it. I enjoyed this immensely, on a very deep level despite me not being a religious person what-so-ever. Thank you for writing this today.

    1. Dr. Alexandra Pinz, you are very welcome. I pray that my advice not only benefits those who are religious, but those who are not. At the end of the day, whatever our beliefs, we all have ONE fundamental thing in common, we are HUMAN BEINGS.
