The Secret Ingredient to Sustainable Change

It is not a secret; everyone knows what they need to do, but they struggle with “how”. Don’t focus on the “how” instead, focus on the “why”.  Why it is important to make this change now?

How can I lose 20 pounds? Instead, rephrase it: “Why is it important to lose 20 pounds now?”

THE QUESTION YOU SHOULD ASK IS “WHY”?

The minute you ask “how”, everyone gets anxious. How can I eat less calories daily? I will be hungry all day. I will get hypoglycemic. I won’t have any energy to do my work. The list of excuses is endless, I know, been there and done that until one day I took a long hard look at myself.

Then I asked this question: “Am I healthy, taking the question further, am I at my optimal best?” It is a well-known fact that our minds and bodies are intimately connected. Everything that happens in our minds affects our bodies.

I was not at my optimal best because I had “rotten thinking”, I was destroying my health by my negative mindset.

The DESIRE for change MUST be stronger than your WANT to eat, smoke, drink, etc. To make that desire strong enough it must be emotionally attached to something that is very important to you. My “WHY?”, I wanted to be totally healthy [the BEST ME POSSIBLE].

Don’t think of it as losing weight, quitting smoking, stopping the use of drugs, or consuming less alcohol; rather, think of it as being YOUR BEST YOU!

WOULD YOU RATHER BE HEALTHY OR SICK?

100% of people asked would choose health; yet, when we overeat, consume excessive amounts of alcohol, use drugs, smoke or do anything that compromises our health, WE ARE CHOOSING TO BE SICK [consciously or subconsciously].

Ultimately, it was seeing patients younger than me who were seriously ill because they had not taken care of themselves that helped me to stay motivated in my quest to be healthier.

THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS IN LIFE WE HAVE NO CONTROL OVER; HOWEVER, THERE ARE STILL A LOT OF THINGS WITHIN OUR CONTROL.

Every action you take, you are making a choice. Why not choose to be healthy or healthier?

SOME BENEFITS OF IMPROVED HEALTH

  • Look better
  • Feel physically and emotionally better
  • Mobility is significantly improved
  • Sleep better
  • Breathe better, which leads to increased endurance
  • Reduced cancer risk
  • Save money, by not having to buy a plethora of medications for DM, HTN, CAD, COPD, etc.

ALL OF THIS LEADS TO A HAPPIER PERSON, WHO IS MORE CONFIDENT, AND WHO FEELS ABLE TO HANDLE ANYTHING THAT LIFE HAS TO OFFER.

  1. Thank you for sharing such an insightful way to looking at our health holistically. I’ve always approached my life style changes or modifications by looking at “what” I needed to change as opposed to the “why” a is change needed.
The “why” forces you to think about the importance the change will have on you mentally, physically, and emotionally. An holistically healthy being is so important to the longevity of our well-being. Again,
thank you for sharing your wisdom. ????➕
